Make Money With YouTube Shorts

YouTube has been a formidable favourite for long-form video content, however, it has earned a reputation for being challenging to monetise, especially for smaller creators. Many struggle to gain traction, even after years of consistent, high-quality posting, without the algorithmic push that benefits larger, established creators. This creates quite a steep climb for newcomers trying to make a mark on the platform and turn their content into a revenue stream.

According to GWI’s 2024 Platform Statistics report, TikTok is less than a decade old, yet the stats show it competes in the same leagues as Netflix and YouTube when it comes to monthly engagement. With TikTok offering massive monetisation potential on top of its popularity, YouTube needed to respond with a similar feature. Enter stage left – YouTube Shorts.

“I remember looking into YouTube as a revenue option for some of our clients when 4Time started diving into long-form production,” says Wanya Visagie, Co-Founder and Director at 4Time. “But the checklist for monetisation just wasn’t realistic. Unless you were willing to invest a ridiculous amount of time and effort – plus a bit of luck with the algorithm – getting monetised wasn’t as easy as YouTube made it sound.”

With the launch of YouTube Shorts in February 2023, creators now have a more accessible way to earn. YouTube took the hint and realised that short-form content isn’t just entertaining; it’s profitable.

The Perks of YouTube Shorts:

  • Instant Engagement: Shorts grab attention in seconds. They’re perfect for pulling viewers in quickly and can boost both engagement and subscribers.
  • Less Hassle, Same Reward: Shorts are faster and easier to produce than traditional long-form videos, which means creators can stay active without sacrificing content quality – or their sanity.
  • Wider Reach: Shorts live in their own feed, so the algorithm gets to work showing your content to a bigger, more diverse audience. People who wouldn’t normally come across your long-form videos might stumble upon – and love – your Shorts.

“It’s an excellent way to build a community and generate revenue on a new platform without constantly churning out tons of new content,” Wanya Visagie adds. “Our 4Time team creates impactful and engaging content, regardless of the platform, so our clients now have the option to share that content to YouTube Shorts, offering more potential for growth. We’ve seen it work wonders for companies like ZoomSphere, where the content ranges from educational tutorials to quirky, niche humor.”

In fact, according to YouTube, around 25% of creators in the YouTube Partner Program are already earning from Shorts. Creators like Jake Fellman, with his unique 3D animation of popular video games, and Kris Collins (Kallmekris), famous for her relatable skits, are pulling in millions of views per month, largely thanks to Shorts. And who doesn’t want to reach 40 million viewers a month?

Ready to Master YouTube Shorts? Here’s How:

  • SEO is Your Friend: Use the right keywords in your titles, descriptions, and tags. Think of YouTube as a search engine – if you give it what it’s looking for, it’ll reward you by pushing your content to a broader audience.
  • Hook ‘Em Early: First impressions matter. Test eye-catching thumbnails with bold text or curious visuals to get those clicks.
  • Ride the Trend Train: Participate in trending challenges or use popular sounds – just like you would on TikTok or Instagram.
  • Experiment, Adjust, Repeat: Dive into your analytics to see what’s working and what’s not. Don’t be afraid to try different styles, formats, and lengths to find your sweet spot.

With over 2 billion users engaging with Shorts monthly and a staggering 70 billion daily views, YouTube Shorts is here to stay. So why not turn your creativity into capital?
